Description: Be Proud! Be Responsible! is a five hour intervention designed to modify behaviors and build knowledge, understanding, and a sense of responsibility regarding STD/HIV risk in vulnerable youth. The intervention aims to affect knowledge, beliefs, and intentions related to condom use and sexual behaviors such as initiation and frequency of intercourse. Planned Parenthood Keystone delivers Be Proud! Be Responsible! through a Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) grant that also includes two additional hours of content focused on the adult preparation topics adolescent development and healthy life skills. Description: The Family Health Council of Central PA, in partnership with Alder Health Services, has developed an innovative and comprehensive program which will address healthy relationships, adolescent development and healthy life skills for adolescents. This project is designed to work with some of the most vulnerable, at-risk youth – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) teens. Teen pregnancy/HIV/STI prevention education will be offered in several in-school and structured after-school settings with the aim of an optimal transition into healthy adulthood by all adolescents. This program will assist youth in developing positive self-esteem, social competence and self-efficacy; healthy attitudes and values about adolescent sexuality, growth and development; and motivation to share the information with their peers. The curriculum aims to develop healthy life skills, and increase the protective factors available to youth. FHCCP implements Becoming a Responsible Teen with trained educators. More info.

Description: The Family Health Council of Central PA, in partnership with the Camp Curtin YMCA, has developed an innovateive and comprehensive program which will: provide life skills education, mentoring, and adult-supervised activities targeting at-risk youth in the Harrisburg area. This project will create and expand opportunities for youth in order to promote optimal transition into healthy adulthood; promote and provide opportunities for the development of positive mentor and other adult relationships with adolescents; enhance parenting and relationship skills for parents, guardians and caregivers of youth; assist youth in developing positive self-esteem and social competence and increase the protective factors available to youth.

This project is designed to work with at-risk youth in a structured after-school setting with the aim of an optimal transition into healthy adulthood by all adolescents. This program will assist youth in developing positive self-esteem and social competence, healthy attitudes and values about adolescent sexuality, growth and development, stress management and body image. The curriculum aims to develop healthy life skills, including informed decision making, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills, and increase the protective factors available to youth. Description: The Family Health Council of Central PA (FHCCP) has developed a teen pregnancy prevention program that is promising, innovative, feasible, and could have an impact on teen pregnancy rates in the targeted communities. The program, On Second Thought (O2T), is a teen pregnancy prevention curriculum targeting 11-14 year olds. The O2T program aims to 1) increase the knowledge, confidence and skills of youth in making informed decisions regarding sexual behavior, 2) increase engagement with parents/care givers regarding sexual development and activity, 3) assist youth in identifying an environmental network of resources to support their decision-making through their sexual development, and 4) reduce adverse health outcomes among youth. Expected long-term outcomes include a decrease in the number of sexually active teens, the number of teen pregnancies, and the rates of STIs/STDs among teens living in small cities and rural PA.
O2T is being implemented by the Family Health Council of Central PA and through partnerships with Hamilton Health Center in Harrisburg, The Reproductive Health Center in Williamsport and Planned Parenthood of Western PA in Pittsburgh. More info.

Description: The Family Health Council of Central PA is implementing a full service Health Resource Center in conjunction with a local federally qualified community health center, Hamilton Health Center. This project builds on an existing program offered at John Harris High School where a part-time Educator/Counselor offers education, counseling, STI testing and treatment, and pregnancy testing to local students during school hours. A health resource center is an ideal complement to this project and enables better connecting teens to clinical services because they have a specific location to go.
The Teen Resource Center (TRC) is a dedicated space creating a teen friendly area with tables, chairs, computers, and a private counseling and education area. Services include: one on one education and counseling, STI/HIV counseling and screening, contraceptive education and the provision of all FDA approved contraceptive methods, pregnancy testing and counseling, and health awareness and outreach activities.

Description: Our school district is currently working on developing a comprehensive sexual health curriculum. We are currently using the FLASH Curriculum, the sexual education network and Advocates for Youth’s Rights, Respect, Responsibility: A K-12 Curriculum as resources for our curriculum development. We haven’t chosen a complete curriculum at this time.
FLASH is a widely used comprehensive sexual health education curriculum developed by Public Health Seattle–King County designed to prevent teen pregnancy, STDs, and sexual violence, and is available for elementary, middle, high school and special education classrooms. FLASH lessons prepare students to: abstain from sex, confirm consent before engaging in sexual activity, communicate with their family about sexual health, make decisions that minimize risk to their sexual health, seek medical care in order to take care of their reproductive health.
Sexual Education Network has over 100 lesson plans, including handouts, on a comprehensive list of topics, from puberty to senior citizens and includes discussion forums to describe the successes, challenges, and adaptations of different lessons.
Rights, Respect, Responsibility : A K-12 Curriculum fully meets the National Sexuality Education Standards and covers all 16 topics recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as essential components of sexual health education. It is inclusive for issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and includes family homework activities resources for educators at every grade level.
